What Is Boba Network and What Does It Do?

Boba Network is an Optimistic Rollups (ORU) based layer 2 blockchain platform that was developed by Enya and the OMG Foundation. This platform has been built to increase scalability of Ethereum and other blockchains through the use of ORUs which can provide better performance through lower fees and increased throughput. The Boba Network introduced Hybrid Compute; this allows developers to move their data and computation off chain for building smarter dApps. Formerly known as OMGX, the Boba Network currently supports the creation of DeFi, NFT, Gaming, and Web3 applications.

What Are Common Questions About Boba Network?

Boba utilizes a Turing system whereby an LTT Gap intercepts smart contract calls with Turing opcodes, makes an external API call off-chain, and returns the result as call data for on-chain verification. By specifying API endpoint developers can provide graceful timeout fallbacks.

Boba is an optimistic multi-chain rollup designed to support hybrid computing directly calling external API’s from smart contracts. In contrast to typical L2’s, it natively allows off-chain data and computing via Turing allowing for use cases such as gaming and integration of real world data. Additionally, Boba retains EVM compatibility but expands the possibility of rollups.

Transactions are verifiable and replayable on the underlying L1 blockchain. API responses are stored on-chain for transparency. Developers are responsible for their own trusted APIs; as well as providing timeout and fallback mechanisms to minimize risk. Decentralizing the sequencer is currently in development.

Use gateway.boba.network to bridge your assets with MetaMask. The platform offers hand-holding for new users, including network switching. Bridging fees are being subsidized to make on-boarding easier.

Yes, multiple DEX’s are available including Sushi, Firefly, Unidex, and Oolongswap. Look at the dApps page at boba.network for trading services across different Boba deployments.

No, you can’t cancel a transaction after it has been confirmed in the network. Check your information carefully before you confirm a transaction.

The API call has a default 1200ms time-out; if you’re using a malicious or slow API this may effect the overall performance of your app, although the best practice would be to always use an API that you trust. Network availability will depend on the centralized sequencer; we are working towards decentralizing this component.

The Boba Team manages Turing Credits through the contracts that we’ve deployed. Access to Turing Credits is limited to users who authenticate through one of our supported faucets (CAPTCHA) or tweet verification. Our custom backend handles all of the business logic for the API.

Is Boba Network Worth It?

We believe that Boba Network is the first multichain Layer 2 Optimistic Rollup solution with the ability to utilize the Hybrid Compute capabilities provided through our Turing System which enables Smart Contracts to pull-off chain APIs and Data to support various use-cases such as Gaming, KYC, Enterprise etc… Although innovative solutions like ours are great, we still face many of the same challenges as other Layer 2 Solutions including Sequencer Centralization and API Timeout Risks. However, the fact that we have a strong focus on the Developer community puts us at a good advantage to support Web3 Apps that require the integration of Real World Data.

Recommended For

  • On-chain Random Number Generators (RNG) and Social Features for game development.
  • DeFi Protocols needing to implement KYC/AML or utilize External Data Oracles.
  • Enterprises looking to integrate their Web2 APIs into Blockchain.
  • Multichain Projects looking to scale through EVM compatible solutions.

!
Use With Caution

  • High Frequency Trading Apps due to API Timeouts.
  • Projects requiring fully Decentralized Sequencers (currently).
  • Users concerned about the amount of Bridging Friction and therefore willing to pay a subsidy to minimize that friction.

Not Recommended For

  • Simple DApp Deployments that do not need Off-Chain Compute.
  • Applications that require Real-Time Data feeds and therefore 1200ms latency is unacceptable.
  • Teams that are risk adverse and want to avoid utilizing Early Stage Hybrid Features.
Expert's Conclusion

Boba provides the best platform for Developers to build Data Intensive Web3 Apps on L2; however, please test your API Integrations Thoroughly prior to Production Deployment.

What Additional Information Is Available for Boba Network?

Developer Community

The Boba Network has an active focus toward hosting hackathons and workshops in order to develop hybrid computing technology and Turing. In addition to hackathons and workshops, the Boba Network encourages developers to become involved with their development documents and Discord chat forum. A YouTube channel is also maintained in order to provide educational content in the form of tutorials related to integrating APIs.

Gaming Focus

The Boba Network is designed as a multichain L2 that was optimized for gaming, including off-chain data such as random number generators (RNG) and social verification. Additionally, it allows for seamless bridging from Web2 to Web3 for luxury goods and membership programs.

Partner Opportunities

The Boba Network invites Web2 services (such as AML/KYC) and data providers to become integrated with the network using custom remote procedure call (RPC) endpoints and Turing. Custom smart contract logic may be developed for enterprises wishing to expand into new markets.

Onboarding Experience

The gateway.boba.network helps to simplify bridging through MetaMask hand holding and also provides discounted rates for bridging. An education hub is also provided, which includes frequently asked questions (FAQs) such as token swapping and transaction finality.

Hybrid Compute Innovation

Turing provides an external API call interface (e.g., Twitter, database), while also providing on-chain verification. Off-chain execution is handled by the LTT Gap, and custom backends (e.g., AWS Lambda) are supported.

What Are the Best Alternatives to Boba Network?

  • Optimism: Optimistic Rollups (ORUs) are a standard type of layer two (L2) blockchain that are compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) and have strong developer adoption. ORUs do not natively support hybrid computing, however, they do offer mature tooling and an open-source OP Stack to allow for the creation of custom chains. ORUs are best suited for general-purpose scaling requirements that do not include off-chain data needs. (optimism.io).
  • Arbitrum: Arbitrum is a leading L2 that utilizes Nitro for high-throughput capabilities and low-cost processing; it also utilizes Stylus to process non-EVM languages. Arbitrum is more established than Boba, but does not natively support Turing-like API calls. Arbitrum is best-suited for DeFi and broader dApp usage. (arbitrum.io)
  • Polygon zkEVM: A zk rollup L2 using validity proofs for security; a multi-chain focus similar to Boba. It has better finality than Boba but lacks an optimistic hybrid feature. This is ideal for all project that prioritize zk security. (polygon.technology)
  • Chainlink Functions: Decentralized computation for executing off-chain code on any chain, including L2 chains. More secure than Boba’s Turing for external APIs however, this will require additional integration. This is best for oracle-heavy applications that are decentralized. (chain.link)
  • zkSync Era: A zk rollup L2 with account abstraction and native bridges. The most powerful use case for gaming like Boba is also the strongest use case for high-security consumer applications, as it utilizes zk proofs instead of an optimistic method to provide secure finality. (zksync.io)
